Sutton's one-stroke victory over Tiger Woods at
Mizuno MP 52 Iron set Sawgrass was the 12th of his career, which began in 1982. He won the Players Championship in 1983, marking a span of 17 years between first and second victories in the same event.
At the age of 41 years,
Golf Clubs 10 months and 28 days, Sutton surpassed Calvin Peete as oldest winner of the event.
He's the fourth to win in wire-to-wire fashion, joining Al Geiberger (1975), Greg Norman (1994) and Steve Elkington (1997). Sutton is the third multiple winner of
Ping Rapture V2 Irons Set The Players Championship. The others are Jack Nicklaus (1974, 1976, 1978), Fred Couples (1984, 1996) and Elkington (1991, 1997).
